JL Audio Subwoofers Factory Photo Tour

by ct_acoustic_frontier July 06, 2022

Soundstage Network have published a photographic tour of the JL Audio facilities in Miramar, Florida. JL Audio make nearly all parts of their fabulous home audio subwoofers in house and have fanatical attention to detail, as can be seen from the shots taken in different parts of their factory. The first shot I've selected shows a JL Audio Gotham cabinet being hand finished. The cabinet is actually constructed from fiberglass rather than MDF and has moulded strengthening ribs. />

The second shot I've selected shows the workstation where the final assembly and testing of each subwoofer takes place. You can see the physical size of the driver used in the Fathom and Gotham subwoofers. It is enormous and designed to reproduce bass with some of the lowest disortion possible.

I for one was very interested to see the care and obvious engineering that goes into these subwoofers.   Acoustic Frontiers is an authorized JL Audio dealer. Part of the challenge of understanding room correction is that it requires a reasonable level of understanding of sound quality, acoustic science, acoustic measurement and psychoacoustics (how humans perceive sound). The majority of the articles I have read online or in print magazines do not cover the fundamentals in enough depth to allow the curious and committed reader a chance to understand room correction on anything more than a cursory level. By the end of this article I hope that you will have learnt enough to judge for yourself what room correction can and cannot do and how best to apply it in the context of a world class music or home theater system.
