Building the Acoustic Frontiers Demo Room: Part 1

by Nyal Mellor July 26, 2012

Words cannot express how awesome this journey has been. I started Acoustic Frontiers with the aim of purely providing acoustic consulting services and some complementary products such as acoustic treatment. Over the last 2.5 years the company has grown substantially, both in terms of sales and also in terms of product and service offerings. What started as a 'side project' has, for almost a year now, occupied my full attention. This vision is perhaps best illustrated by our new tag line or mission statement:

Acoustic Frontiers: specializing in the design, build and calibration of high performance listening rooms and home theaters.

With this in mind let me present to your our latest project - the Acoustic Frontiers demo room! I have been carefully piloting the course to a dedicated demonstration facility for at least 18 months now. This demo room will encapsulate and explain all the things we can do as a company. Here are some of the key details:
  • Dedicated 'media' room, supporting a world class two channel listening room and home theater
  • Four power circuits feeding the room - two dedicated to audio (one 20A 120V and one 20A 240V). The 240V is to feed a nice big balancing Torus isolation transformer
  • Sound isolated using double drywall, Green Glue, isolation clips / hat channel and rubber underlayment
  • Featuring high efficiency, compression driver / constant directivity horn speakers by Procella (we just signed up as a dealer, blog post to follow on these amazing devices)
  • Incorporating at least one and possibly two DEQX HDP-4s for speaker and room correction
  • Highlighting an electrically retractable 4K Seymour Screen Excellence screen
  • 4 subwoofers in a mode cancelling layout
  • Projector in a hush box (hopefully the RED one!). We have installed a SIM2 Nero in our demo room, as the RED projector is nowhere to be seen, and anyway the SIM2 looks awesome!
  • And of course acoustic treatment and final system calibration by our good selves
Once completed the demo room will be available by appointment and will be located in Fairfax, CA in Marin County (San Francisco Bay Area). Scheduled opening is end of October. Here are some photos and commentary to whet your appetite: width= The demo room began life as a bedroom and two walk in closets. The partition walls were removed together with the oak floor and the doors to the master bedroom and hall blocked in. The internal sheetrock was removed so that Kinetics Isomax isolation clips and a double layer of drywall and Green Glue could be applied. The floor will be covered with a rubber underlayment eventually.[/caption]   width= View from the hallway into the demo room through the new door opening. width= The demo room after insulation. This home was build in 1959 and so was uninsulated. Insulation helps absorb sound in the wall cavity and is a key part of the overall sound isolation design. width= The demo room with sound isolation clips and hat channel installed. width= View to the projector hush box from inside the demo room. We're not sure exactly what projector is going in there! width= The first layer of 5/8" type X (fire resistant) sheetrock on the ceiling has been installed. After this we installed the wall sheetrock then another layer on the ceiling with Green Glue and then finally another layer on the wall with Green Glue. The drywalling is done in this order to overlap the seams and reduce the chance for sound to escape. All seams in the first layer of drywall and at the corners were sealed with acoustical sealant.[/caption]

The next phase is the installation of the sound isolated door, rubber underlayment and the baffle wall. Hopefully the next month should see this phase completed and I'll be sure to write a follow up blog post with the juicy details and photos! Here's part 2 of the demo room build.

Building the Acoustic Frontiers Demo Room - Part III: Paint, Star Ceiling, Lights and Carpet

by Nyal Mellor February 01, 2013 0 Comments

It's been quite a while since the last blog update on the Acoustic Frontiers Demo Room. However I am happy to say that there has been a lot of progress, although the room is still not finished! The room is already 'up and running' in the sense that it can be used for music and movies but there are still some areas we are working on and a couple of key items that still need to be installed. Today I am going to give a update on the interior decoration and fit out of the room.

A recent review of the new Torus RM15+ in Stereo Times prompted us to put together this selection of review snippets.

Torus Power RM15

The Torus is the fifth isolation transformer unit that I have used and is clearly...the best sounding isolation transformer I have heard. Norm Lutbeg, Stereo Times RM15+ review.
