Every high-end audio listening room, home theater, and home recording studio needs acoustic treatment. It’s needed to deal with room mode resonances, reflections, and control flutter echo.
Absorbers are typically used for reflection point control. In this application, we look for consistent absorption over frequency from 200-20,000Hz. This typically means 4” thick rigid polyester, fiberglass, or rock wool, though some multi-layer absorbers can meet this requirement in 2” depths.
For diffusers, what we look for depends on the application. For reflection control, consistent scattering from 1kHz-4kHz, which is the frequency band most important for control of the deleterious effects of strong reflections on imaging. Depending on the application, a one-dimensional (1D) or two-dimensional (2D) scattering pattern may be preferred.
For bass traps, efficacy at the target frequency. Typical acoustic treatments advertised as bass traps such as simple 4” or 6” fiberglass panels are not effective at controlling room resonances unless employed in large quantities, which have negative effects in terms of making the room too dead. Effective products are either 2-4” tuned diaphragmatic resonators/metal plates or deep (12”+) porous absorbers with high-frequency absorption rolled off using perforated wood or slats.
Our go-to absorber is a bonded polyester product made in NZ from recycled water bottles. It’s available in depths from 1”-4” and does not contain any toxic Formaldehyde binders like many fiberglass-based panels. We custom process this material to meet each project’s unique needs. It does not require a fabric wrap or finish layer and can be used nude, affixed to a wall or ceiling.
Our go-to diffuser is custom-made for us here in the USA. It’s a spline interpolation of a 2D QRD, with a smaller than usual 12”x12” sizing. Typical 24”x24” diffusers are too large to be the best tools to use to control reflections in most residential spaces because they are excessively large compared to the size of the reflection area.
In our experience, metal plate absorbers are one of the best acoustic treatment options for room mode control. These products employ a steel plate that is damped by an absorber. They absorb through a combination of mechanisms, including mass/air resonance, plate mode resonance, and diffraction. We know how to design these to target specific frequencies, how many, and where to place them within a room for best results. We build these to order in our California facility to meet the specific needs of each client project.
With Acoustic Frontiers, all it takes is 4 simple steps.
We'll take the time to understand your unique needs and goals to customize our approach to designing the best experience for you.
This is where the magic happens and what really makes Acoustic Frontiers stand out. Every room is different, and we’ll account for all the elements that impact performance in your space to ensure you get the best system for your budget.
We’ll make the installation process as painless as possible and carefully calibrate your system to optimize performance.
You deserve the best, and now you’ve got it. Put on your favorite movie or album, or create your next track because the system you wanted is yours to enjoy.
“Before the acoustic treatments were installed, it sounded really good, but now the characteristics are very different. It sounds like a different room. I can localize all speakers much better now, especially the ceiling and rears which I was having issues hearing. Sound is way more separated and distinct. The room sounds much more musical. The biggest difference is definitely what I call “control”. The sound is very controlled now. It’s hard to describe, but that is the best way I know how.”
“The custom treatments solved my room’s long-standing bass issues and elevated the system to a whole new level of audio performance! I can’t speak highly enough for Acoustic Frontiers’ expertise, professionalism, and ease to deal with. I recommend them wholeheartedly to anyone who is needing to take their room and sound to the pinnacle of audio enjoyment!”
