The Issues We Solve Through Electrical Design

An objective, data-based electrical design process resolves many issues, including:

  • Surges that destroy or shorten the lifespan of expensive equipment.
  • Power outages during system use that cause projector lamps to overheat and fail.
  • Breakers that trip during dynamic action scenes.
  • Hums and buzzes caused by ground loops.

We stop you:

  • Spending hours researching power quality issues and still missing the boat on the best way to design the electrical system for your room.
  • Wasting money on the wrong kind of surge protectors.
  • Suffering from the negative effects of power quality issues.

The Benefits Of Electrical Design

  • Protect your investment in high-performance audio/video equipment from electrical surges, noise, outages, and over/under voltage conditions.
  • Get an electrical design customized for the unique needs of YOUR system.
  • Sleep soundly with the knowledge that power quality will never hold back your system’s audio/video performance.

What’s Included?

Acoustic Frontiers’ Electrical Design service is a comprehensive, data-based approach to creating the optimal electrical system design for your listening room, home theater, or home recording studio. We know all the different types of power quality issues you might encounter in your installation and real-world experience of how to best design electrical systems for high-performance audio/video reproduction. Our extensive knowledge of all the different products on the market will help you pick the best surge protectors, UPSs, and other power quality assurance devices for your project.

The primary input to the electrical design process is the audio/video equipment selection, as determined through our Audio Equipment Engineering and Video Equipment Engineering services.

Here’s how it works:

  • Calculate the average and maximum equipment power draw. Unlike unsophisticated approaches, we don’t just add up the ‘spec sheet’ power consumption figures. Loads are separated into their type - whether static, for devices such as projectors that draw the same power continuously or dynamic, for amplifiers whose power consumption varies depending on the input signal and SPL. Dynamic loads are derated based on calculations of expected power consumption for the specific speakers and subwoofers used in your system and the desired target SPL level for listening.
  • Determine electrical system topology. Using the calculated average and maximum power draws, we determine the best combination of electrical circuits for your system. Wire gauge, the number of conductors, and other details are specified for each circuit.
  • Specify power quality equipment, namely panel mount and point-of-use surge protectors, ground filters, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and power distribution units (PDUs).

Finally, when all the calculations are done, we document the design so that your electrician has the information they need to wire up your system.

What You’ll Get

  • Documented calculations of average / maximum power draw per component together with ampacity requirements for the whole system.
  • Line drawing showing electrical circuit topology, with specification on wire gauge, number of conductors and receptacles.
  • Schedule of panel mount and point-of-use surge protectors, ground filters, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and power distribution units (PDUs).

What Do Our Clients Think?

“Several years ago, I installed an expensive home theater in my family room. The system never performed at the level I expected for the price paid. I hired Acoustic Frontiers to evaluate my audio system and together we implemented several changes. I cannot underestimate the before and after difference. My wife, who has little patience for appreciating subtle, iterative improvements in performance, instantly appreciated the benefits and deemed them well worth the cost.”

Mr. Bransten, San Francisco, CA

"Acoustic Frontiers were very patient and helpful when it came to selecting speakers and equipment for the room. As a vendor for a multitude of companies, I really felt that I was getting objective advice. They helped me select everything from the speakers, AVR,  to even the projector and screen! The end result was nothing short of amazing and my family and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Acoustic Frontiers receives my highest recommendation. We can’t thank you all enough!”

L.O., NY.

"Acoustic Frontiers are fantastic to work with. They listen and hear your needs and wants, but they aren’t shy about setting you straight either. They are also very flexible in working with a variety of budgets."
