Home Theater Engineered for Reference-Class Performance and Cinematic Design

Client Profile

Our client, KH, sought a home theater that delivers reference-class performance while remaining a comfortable, family-friendly space. After interviewing several home theater companies, KH found that Nyal Mellor of Acoustic Frontiers stood out as a knowledgeable expert who would craft a customized solution tailored to their space and unique requirements, rather than simply selling off-the-shelf audio or video equipment.

Project Overview

The primary goals for KH’s home theater were to deliver reference-class audio and video performance in a family-friendly environment while creating a space that is visually elegant and integrates seamlessly with the rest of the home. The room, approximately 14' × 14' x 10', is located in the middle of the house, making complete sound isolation from surrounding living areas essential.

Additional objectives included:

  • Precise low-frequency reproduction with consistent seat-to-seat coverage.
  • Minimization of room-induced acoustic artifacts through strategic acoustic treatment and bass management.
  • Full integration of high-performance AV gear, including JBL Synthesis speakers, PowerSoundAudio subwoofers, and a JVC NZ7 projector with a Seymour Screen Excellence Enlightor Neo acoustically transparent screen.
  • Effective electrical planning, HVAC integration, lighting, and low-voltage control for seamless operation.

Acoustic Frontiers Solution

Acoustic Frontiers provided a complete home theater design package for KH, delivering every element necessary to achieve reference-class performance in a family-friendly environment:

  • Home Theater Layout
Careful planning of the room’s geometry, seating, and component placement ensured optimal sightlines, immersive audio coverage, and seamless integration with the home’s architecture.
  • Subwoofer Placement Optimization
Multiple subwoofer placement scenarios were modeled and evaluated using SPL mapping and seat-to-seat consistency analysis. The final dual PRO15.2 configuration provides balanced low-frequency response across the entire listening area.
  • Audio Equipment Engineering
System-level engineering of JBL Synthesis speakers, including LCR, surround, and overhead channels, ensures precise 3D imaging and accurate reference-class sound reproduction.

  • Video Equipment Engineering
The JVC NZ7 laser projector and Seymour Screen Excellence Enlightor Neo were carefully specified and positioned for optimal throw, lens shift, and brightness, delivering accurate SDR/HDR imagery.

  • Acoustic Treatment Design
Side, rear, and ceiling walls were treated with absorbers, 2D diffusers, and custom bass traps. CAD-modeled placement ensures early reflection control and modal optimization while maintaining a clean visual aesthetic.

  • Sound Isolation Design
Walls, ceilings, floors, doors, and windows were engineered for STC-rated isolation. Conduits, electrical boxes, and HVAC penetrations were carefully sealed to prevent acoustic leaks.

  • HVAC Design
Quiet, efficient airflow and temperature control were integrated without compromising acoustic integrity, including muffler boxes and isolated supply/return ducting.

  • Electrical Design
Dedicated circuits, projector UPS, and surge protection were installed to handle dynamic AV system loads and protect sensitive electronics.

  • Lighting Design
Carefully integrated lighting with backer boxes preserved acoustic performance whilst highlighting the interior design and providing low level step lighting is non-obtrusive whilst using the room.

  • Low Voltage Design
Signal cabling, conduit and network/control wiring were implemented to enable AV automation, source switching, and future system expansion.
  • Baffle Wall Design
Custom cabinetry houses LCR speakers and subwoofers behind acoustically transparent fabric, combining aesthetic elegance with optimal performance.

  • Home Theater Riser Design
Seating platform was engineered for proper sightlines, optimal audio positioning, and ergonomic comfort.
  • Hush Box Design
A projector hush box was created to manage airflow and heat while minimizing operational noise, preserving both performance and room quietness.

  • Integrated Custom Design
As part of the baffle wall and acoustic treatment design, custom-printed movie posters on acoustic fabric were incorporated at the client’s request. This created a unique cinematic poster experience in the room while maintaining optimal acoustic performance, elegantly integrating visuals into the home theater environment.

Equipment

Audio Components

  • Speakers: JBL Synthesis SCL-6, SCL-7, and SCL-8, configured for LCR, surround, and overhead channels.

  • Subwoofers: 2 × PowerSoundAudio PRO15.2 ported subwoofers with dedicated PRO1600 amplifier.

  • Audio-Video Receiver: AudioControl Concert XR-8 and Avalon G4 with processing and amplification for the 11 speaker system.

Video Components

  • Projector: JVC NZ7 laser projector for high-fidelity image reproduction.

  • Screen: Seymour Screen Excellence Enlightor Neo, 103" wide acoustically transparent screen, allowing the LCR speakers to be optimally placed behind the screen.

  • Kaleidescape Strato player and Terra movie server.

Electrical and Power Infrastructure

  • Dedicated 120V circuits for AV equipment with Environmental Potentials EP-2050-EE whole home surge protection.

  • UPS and battery backup (Furman F1000-UPS) for projector cooldown.

  • IP power conditioning (SurgeX SX-AX20E) to safeguard sensitive electronics and provide auto-reboot functionality to reduce service calls.

  • Circuits configured and derated for dynamic AV loads, with provisions for future expansion.

Cabling and Connectivity

  • Speaker wire, CAT6 Ethernet, RG6 coax, HDMI 8K-48G, with OM3 fiber for future upgrades.

  • Professional wire managed and labeled remotely located equipment rack for ease of service.

  • Conduits (1-1/4") routed from equipment closets to room front wall and projector hush box for future upgrades.

Control System

  • Custom programmed RTI universal remote system provides seamless control of the AV system as well as lighting scenes.

Results

The completed theater exceeded our client's expectations. Bass is uniform across all seats, room modes are minimized, and sound isolation ensures a fully immersive experience. SDR and HDR content is displayed accurately, and the room’s aesthetic remains clean and visually elegant.

In the Words of the Client

"It was a pleasure working with Acoustic Frontiers. They were precise and clear in their communication, responsive to questions and delivered a high level of quality and excellence. Simply put, they did what they said they would do. On-time and on-budget. The project required extensive collaboration between my architect, builder, and Acoustic Frontiers, and they worked well with all of them. I believe they even created a first-of-a-kind print for movie posters on acoustic fabric in response to our ask for creating a movie theater-like poster experience in the room with constrained wall space. The home theater came out exactly as I had hoped, and even exceeded those expectations. It is one of my (our) favorite rooms in the home and my wife and I have spent thousands of hours (literally) watching movies and streaming media shows there." KH, Palo Alto, CA.
